Khadijah bint Khuwaylid: Khadijah bint Khuwaylid bin Asad bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza bin Qusai bin Kilab al-Qurashiyyah was recognized as the leader, or Sayyedah, of all the women during her time. Her father was a prominent figure in the arenas of business and trade, and her mother, Fatima bint Za’id bin Al-Asamm was related to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through her grandmother, Lu’ayy bin Ghalib. She was born 68 years before the Hijrah, and 15 years before the Year of the Elephant. She was a wealthy businesswoman of her time, and was brought up in a household run with high levels of morality, nobility, power, and leadership. She married the Prophet (SAW) at the age of 40, and they became exemplary spouses for each other, and teachers for all those in the Meccan and Medinan cities because of their avid love, support, and strong levels of encouragement for one another. She used to spend days and nights serving him, and welcomed/supported any decision he would make. When the Prophet (SAW) would receive the Revelations, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid remained by his side and accepted whatever teachings he would convey. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid is one of the prominent role models for women in Islam, and she holds such an exalted position that the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet (SAW), Ali ibn Abi Talib, has reported that the Messenger said, “Sufficient for you from the women of the world are Mary — the daughter of ‘Imran, Khadeejah — the daughter of Khuwailid, Fatimah — the daughter of Muhammad, and Asiah — the wife of Firaun.” To learn more about this extraordinary woman’s life history, check out the following books from the Furqaan Bookstore:
