The edifice of Islam rests on these basic pillars of the Quran and the Hadith or the Kitab and Sunnah. While the Quran provides the basic principles to be followed by a Muslim the Sunnah or Hadith contains the detailed laws as elucidated and explained by the Prophet ( pbuh ).

Truly speaking , the Quran cannot be understood and its teachings cannot be acted upon without the elucidation and guidance provided by the Prophet ( pbuh ) which in turn preserved in the books of Hadith.
