  1. Why are there reminders for the people of understanding? Who are these people of understanding? The Quran answers these questions very beautifully and precisely. Allah (SWT) says in Surah Sad # 29. This is a Book (the Quran) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its verses, and that people of understanding may remember. The characteristics of the people of understanding are described in Az-Zumar # 18. ‏ Those who listen to the Word (good advice) and follow the best thereof, those are the ones whom Allah has guided and those are the people of understanding. Why the reminders are necessary? Even a sincere person can forget things very easily. That is why Allah (SWT) said to Prophet Mohammad (SAS). Adh-Dhariyat # 55 And remind (by preaching the Quran), for verily, the reminding profits the believers. Also in Az-Zumar # 9.‏ Is one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: “Are those who know equal to those who know not?” It is only people of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah’s Signs and Verses). That is why it is mentioned again and again in Quran. It is only people of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah’s Signs and Verses). Here is an example of Allah’s reminder. Az-Zumar # 21 ‏ See you not, that Allah sends down water (rain) from the sky, and causes it to penetrate the earth, (and then makes it to spring up) as watersprings and afterward thereby produces crops of different colours, and afterward they wither and you see them turn yellow, then He makes them dry and broken pieces. Verily, in this, is a reminder for men of understanding. Is there a criterion to find out who are the people of understanding? Yes, there has always been a criterion for it. The people of true understanding are those who see things in light of the guidance provided by the Creator. Guidance of Allah (SWT) is the criterion of right and wrong. That is why Allah (SWT) calls Quran “Al-Furqan” which makes the absolute distinction between the right and wrong. Al-Baqarah # 185. The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). Also in Al-Furqan # 1. Blessed is He Who sent down the criterion (of right and wrong, i.e. this Quran) to His slave Mohammad (SAS) that he may be a warner to the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns). Note that Furqan is so important that Allah (SWT) named this chapter of the Quran ‘Al-Furqan’. Guidance given to all the Prophets is Furqan because the same one God revealed it and there is unity and consistency in the message of Allah (SWT). For example, what was revealed to Musa (AS) and Haroon (AS) is mentioned in Al-Anbiya # 48,49. And indeed We granted to Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) the criterion (of right and wrong), and shining light i.e. the Taurat and a Reminder for Al-Muttaqun (the pious and rigteous persons). Those who fear their Lord without seeing Him, while they are afraid of the Hour. What were the motivators for me to compile this book? My first similar book “Speeches For An Inquiring Mind” was widely circulated. Many people from Nigeria, Kenya, Singapore and nearly all English speaking countries welcomed the book. In fact, there is very little Islamic literature written in simple English language available to the general public. On the contrary, the Christians have their literature in a very presentable form on the doorsteps of nearly every household. It is distributed free of charge all over the world. It was very pleasing for me to receive a positive response to my first book. By the Grace of Allah (SWT) at least forty thousand copies have been distributed free of charge so far. Perhaps nurses and doctors working in the Saudi hospitals benefited the most. It not only clarified the Islamic concepts for the Muslim doctors and nurses but it went a long way in introducing Islam to many non-muslims. By the Grace of Allah (SWT) many of these nurses accepted Islam and others were considering it seriously. For example, nursing coordinator in King Fahd Hospital, Madina, is Edna. Even as a non-muslim she distributed about one thousand books to the nursing staff because she personally benefited from it immensely. It was very thrilling for me when Edna called after Ramadhan of 2000, informing me that she and many of her friends had also embraced Islam. It must be mentioned here that the role of World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) and other similar organizations in presenting Islam to non-muslims is very vital. Similarly, teaching activities of WAMY and volunteer services of students of religious institutions like Islamic University of Madina in enhancing the teaching /learning process is very commendable. Embracing Islam with basic knowledge and then practicing Islamic principles with understanding puts the new Muslims far ahead of the traditional Muslims. Indeed, Allah (SWT) guides to the right path and keeps on it whom He likes. There was a continuous pressure on me from the local doctors and nurses to write another similar book in simple language. I was very reluctant since in Islam, it is mandatory to practice what we preach. I know it clearly that it will fire back on the preacher if he does not adhere to the teachings of Islam. In fact, one of the first few batches which will be dispatched by Allah (SWT) to taste the torment of hellfire will be such defaulting preachers. After great reluctance, I have compiled this book since it serves as a great reminder to me personally. May Allah (SWT) accept this effort and enable me to practice it sincerely and bring me and the readers into more and more light from all forms of darkness. Al-Hadid # 9.‏ It is He who sends down clear-cut verses and signs to His slave (Mohammad (SAS)) that He may bring you out from darkness into light. And verily, Allah is to you full of kindness, Most Merciful.
